Blankets promise warmth and rest and comfort. Maybe this is why I stockpile them in our house. My girls each have their own special “blankie” and “comfey” plus a comforter and quilt. We’ve got blankets draped over the couches and beds and stuffed into cupboards and chests. When I’m lazing on the couch, napping or watching TV or checking email, I’ve almost always got a blanket wrapped around me. In fact, I’m curled up in one right now!
Here’s a list of my favorite uses for blankets:
- Lay a blanket on the grass or sand for a picnic.
- Cuddle up under a blanket with the family to watch a movie and eat popcorn.
- Go stargazing on a chilly, clear night. Bring blankets to wrap up in.
- Build a living room fort with blankets draped over couches, tables and chairs. Eat lunch inside the fort.
- Tie a blanket on for a cape.
- Put a soft blanket in the backseat for the kids on family road trips.
- Give a cuddly throw as a wedding or baby gift.
- Turn the heat down a bit in the winter and pile an extra quilt or two on your bed.
- Keep a blanket in the trunk of your car for when opportunities present themselves.
What else?

I love blankets too...but since i have boys, we do have one more use for them!
They make the perfect capes. Just tie one around your neck, stand on the couch, and jump...the blaket will fly in wind like SuperMan! Chloe likes to tie them around her neck too...they make great wedding veils or princess capes!
I love a good, snuggly blanket. We love to throw a blanket over the coffee table and call it a fort. We keep a picnic blanket in our trunk. So fun! Great post!!
Abe is the king of blankets in our house. as a baby he used to carry a blanket for comfort. As a small boy he required each of his 8 special blankets to be placed on him 1 at a time at bedtime (and he liked to hear the story of where it came from, who made it, or who gave it to him). Even now at age 12 he is rarely without a blanket cuddled around him while at home. He even swiped his sisters birthday blanket to use as his own (although his story is that it was an even trade).
And, just for the record, if all your bath towels happen to be in the wash and someone happens to take a shower. A cuddly blanket can dry the bod quite nicely. what can i say...i'm resourceful and yes, my laundry can pile up until we are towel-less. so what.
I love this post and that crocheted blanket is gorgeous. I am a blanket fool. We keep at least two in our den at all times, and that doesn't count the two or three baby blankets. I'm the same way with wraps and slings for babywearing. They, too, provide comfort and security, but my baby and I take them everywhere we go!
