The girls can count past 20 out loud, but they aren't able to recognize all the numbers through ten. So we made these counting books to practice number recognition.
I assembled them by stapling {11} 6x6" pages together, one for each number up to 10 and an extra page for the cover. Then I cut a 2x6" strip of paper to fold and glue over the spine of the books and cover the staples.
Sparkly animal stickers were on sale at Joann's for $1.00 a sheet, so I found 10 different types of animals for the project. I counted the animals on each sheet to make sure there would be enough for 8 ladybugs each, 9 butterflies each, 10 birds each, and so on.
I labeled each page with a white sticker and a number 1-10. Together, we talked about the number written on each page, and then the girls put the correct number of stickers on that page.
The books turned out darling, and we've been reading them together over and over. When we skip around to different pages, they often get stuck on recognizing the number 7. So, we recount the fish stickers and then read the number together. They're getting it!
