The Little House by Viriginia Lee Burton

Who doesn't long for the quite, simple life of fields and trees and flowers in the country?

This book is about a lovely little home that finds herself being overrun by urban sprawl - tall buildings, heavy machinery, and artificial light that blocks out the sun and moon.

In the end, the little house is moved back to a peaceful hill where she can enjoy the seasons and beauties around her.

Sweet pictures and a wonderful story that makes me want to pack up the picnic basket and head out for a while.

Oh. My. Goodness! Thank you so much for posting this! I was thinking about this book just a few days ago, my grandmother had it at her home. It was one of my favorites, but I couldn't recall the name. Now I can buy it for my own kids!!! THANK YOU!

We've been reading this book lately too. Such a good one.

Kind of crazy that it was written in the 1940's and it's so relevant for today.

And the illustrations are wonderful.

We loved Virginia Lee Burton books at our house! And, for those who don't know, you can talk about personification in all her books because the main character (house, tractor, steam engine, trolley car, etc.) all look like they have faces and show emotion.

I love all of her books. Especially Mike Mulligan and the steam shovel.

We love this book too. And did you notice that the steam shovel from "Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel" makes an appearance? The kids love that!

Good seeing you yesterday!!!

I just randomly came across your blog, and I absolutely LOVED this book as a child. I also loved Blueberries for Sal, which you recently posted about, and Zoom. Amazing children's book selections!!!

I read your blog every day & have enjoyed the story of your family so much. I remember reading this book to our children--3 of them & they are now 36-41 years old! I remember getting it at the Salvation Army Thrift Store lo those many years ago--our favorite stop for books! They loved it so very much & it's been passed on to our eldest child for his children now. Thanks for the memory!
Love to your dear girls,

I stumbled across this book in my classroom- left behind by the teacher before me. It was years before I actually opened it, but I'm glad I did- it's such a treasure!

My favorite book. I found it at a thrift store and the cover looked so cute. I hadn't read the book before purchasing it. What a great find that was! My daughters really like it too.
