We've started homeschooling. Last week was bliss, today {Monday morning} was a bit more of a challenge. But we're persevering.
This week we are memorizing Robert Louis Stevenson's poem, "Time to Rise,"
A birdie with a yellow bill
Hopped upon the window sill,
Cocked his shining eye and said:
"Ain't you 'shamed, you sleepyhead?"
To get us started, we drew this lovable birdie out of circles and triangles. Here's how we did it:
1. I had the girls practice drawing circles and triangles on a piece of scratch paper.
2. Using a pencil, I asked them to lightly draw a large circle in the middle of their watercolor paper.
3. Then, still with a pencil, they drew a smaller circle for the head and triangles for the bill and wings. We used straight lines for the legs. They did some erasing and rewriting until they got the hang of the different shapes.
4. They traced their whole drawing with a black Sharpie pen.
5. Lastly, they used watercolors to paint their picture.
And the birdies turned out so imperfectly sweet.

Hi Chrissie,
Welcome to the wonderful world of homeschooling. We are working on getting a letter out to the girls. Sorry we've been terrible corresponders!
love the birdies and the poem and you!
The birds are darling! I've been following for quite a while--I didn't realize you were planning to homeschool! How exciting!
How cute...love her painting!

I have a confession...I started following your blog simply because of its name! :) I love your blog title! lol
Good for you for home schooling. I was home schooled growing up and it was the best gift my parents could have given me. I also home school my oldest son.
He recently memorized that SAME poem!! Isn't it such a sweet one? You did an amazing job on the activities to correspond with it. You take beautiful photos too.
Welcome to the wonderful world of homeschooling twins. I love it and I'm sure you will too.

Very cute. So is this poem in a book of poems? For kids? Just one you found?
I love rhymes and applying them. The birds are adorable!
Remind me again how old the girls are? My 4 year old is still struggling quite a bit with drawing his shapes. Identifying them verbally - no issue, but struggles with pen to paper activities. The girls did wonderfully!!!
Thanks for sharing the poem - maybe it will brighten the "get up" routine around here!

Have you ever heard of "Drawing With Children" by Mona Brooks?
Love the little birdies. Wishing you a wonderful year of homeschooling. What cute students you have. :)
Great idea! I am going to use it for Levi!
My bird-adoring girls will love this! Thanks! :)
I homeschool my boys who are 4 and 2. We are in my own curriculum as I was an educator for 7 years before staying home with to have kids.
We are in our 5th week. It is rigorous but so rewarding so far.
Much luck and quality learning all while living to you!
I'll be sure to keep in touch to see all the goodness you are into!!

I always check out your blog. Wondered what was going on there for awhile (o: Is this the first year of Home Schooling?
how exciting. scot & i just decided that we will also be homeschooling. our oldest is 4, so next fall we will officially begin. this year we are joining a nature study group. i also have been joining in on a charlotte mason group of mamas who meet once a month to share. have you chosen a method/curriculum, or are you building one yourself based on the girls' interests? blessings to you in this journey! enjoy.
Here's some answers to the questions you've asked, my lovely blog reader friends~
Mickey-we've been terrible pen pals. We'll have to work on that!
Kate-the poem is from A Child's Garden of Verses by Robert Louis Stevenson. My girls are 5 1/2 and drawing the triangles took a couple tries and a little help from me.
Christian-I have the book Drawing With Children. I've heard great things about it. I should pull it out and read it!
Grammy-Yes, this is our first year homeschooling.
Jennifer, I'm so excited that you guys are homeschooling! We are using a Classical approach. I really like Charlotte Mason's philosophy and am using some of her ideas.
Was so happy with the birdie lesson for yesterday when I had my 4-yr-old granddaughter for the day, Chrissie! I live in a world of art, and her and I do art projects whenever she is with me. Your girls did a lovely job - and I am in love with her painting (you can take a look at www.aprilsart.blogspot.com ) Thank you for all your great ideas! And good luck with the homeschooling - but of course you will be a wonderful teacher!
I recently came accross your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I dont know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

Very cute.
It appears girls are painting within the lines. Did they continue staying inside the lines? Are they perfectionists?
Glad I stumbled upon your blog--very cute, and I adore the name!
Love this idea :) I might borrow this to do with DD later this week!
I am excited to enjoy your journey into homeschooling - we are also beginning our journey next year on a more serious level... it will be fun to watch your family enjoy the journey too!
are you using any certain websites for your homeschool?
We are starting basic preschool stuff and I am the kind of person who needs a little inspiration to know what she needs to know!
