Letting It Be Unorganized {Sometimes}

I'm reading a book called For the Children's Sake that is challenging some of my overly-organized, hyper-scheduled, to-do-list-oriented ways. It's based on the educational philosophy of Charlotte Mason. While I'm not sure I subscribe to everything in the book, I am learning a lot and refining my own educational and parenting philosophies.

One point the author, Susan Macauley, makes is that children need plenty of unrushed, unorganized playtime to explore, create, move, and imagine. This is something I agree with wholeheartedly, but I still have to be deliberate to make sure it happens everyday.

Running, climbing, digging, singing, dancing, skating...moving without thinking about each step, without a plan. I believe this type of play is as vital to the growth of a child as learning to read.

i completely agree that unstructured play is just as important as learning to read. esp in these days of so much technology. i keep reading about how children are not getting outdoors enough. i'm really trying to make sure my kids do. even on the colder days.

putting the book on my wish list!

We to really try to encourage this kind of play daily if the day allows. Have you ready "Last Child In The Woods"? It too is a GREAT book -- completely worth the read!

Take baby steps, C. I applaud your efforts to stretch and grow as a mom and a person. I believe we only get stronger when we get out of our comfort zones.

Can't wait to see your new daily routine:

9:30-10:30 -Unstructured Play

:)

This book sounds really interesting. Do you think it would be a helpful read even if you are not homeschooling?

Yes, I agree with some of that! They do need time to play!

I'm reading the same book right now (along with Grace Based Parenting, by Tim Kimmel). Both books are challenging in a good way.

I have just found your blog thru Sarah Markley and LOVE it! I agree that I also have to deliberately find time for my children to have free time. It is hard some days. I think I will pick up this book! Sounds good!
