My grandmother has a glass-topped coffee table that's full of "things" -- old coins, dried starfish, old straight razors, and everything else you can imagine. They've been adding to it since my Mom was little.

A couple of years back, my husband and I bought a similar table of our own and have been adding our own weird little bits. So far there's a snake skin grandpa found in Arizona, a beaver tooth my son found in our own stream, a few bits of petrified wood, and some other stuff that only the kids understand.

You and this story reminded me so much of my mother. In 1991, I dissected a large worm in science lab. I was so intrigued that my teacher let me transfer the pinned-open worm to a small piece of particle board. My mother attached magnets to the back and actually put the thing on the fridge. It stayed there until dried bits began falling off when we slammed the door shut!

I know nothing about how girls work, but my boys would be happy having this in a box, and for that box to become the place for all random nature finds that won't eventually stink up the place. Maybe a "nature box" they can decorate, and use to collect feathers, rocks, bones,snake skins, etc.
