Whole House Surge Protector Reviews – Top 5
Leviton 51120-1
This Leviton isn’t the cheapest option out there, but it is one of the better spec models on the market for the price point. It is also very simple to install- the installation process only took about 40 minutes – my electrician said it was relatively easy to install.
It also is quite simplistic as it can share 2 20-amp breakers which is nice to have. It also comes with a 10-year warranty which not only covers the device itself but also covers the devices you have connected to your electric which is great piece of mind as well.
- Easy to install
- Excellent warranty offered
- Widely compatible
- Premium quality

Best Whole House Surge Protector
Intermatic Smart Guard IG2240-IMSK
This is one of the more expensive surge protectors on the market that does live up to the price it demands.
The main thing I was personally impressed with this unit was that if an electrical surge hits your home not only will this device protect you, but it can be used after the fact.
Most other surge protectors can not be reused whereas with this one it is just a matter of replacing the modules that where effected by the surge and then you are up and running again. So, using a unit like this is ideal if your home is often affected by electrical surges. Also replacing said modules is easy to do – its just a matter of popping out the affected modules and popping in the new replacement ones. It’s also not a trial and error process, you just look at the lights on the front of the surge protector and this will show you exactly where each bad module is.
For installation with this surge protector I would recommend getting it installed by electrician. The device itself is really high quality and is a well-made design as suggested by my electrician.
- High quality build and design
- Can be reused after a surge
- Quite quick install time
- Top choice
- Pricey
Square D by Schneider Electric HEPD80
If you are looking for an affordable surge protector that will protect your whole home this is probably a great choice for you.
The thing I particularly liked about this one is that it is very easy to install and should be a simple job for anyone with some electrical experience. Another thing I really like with this unit is that it has a high protection rating of 80,000 amps. The only thing that could get anywhere near this level would be a direct lightning strike so therefore you are well protected with this unit.
Once it is up and running you will have 2 lights that are used to show that it is working correctly. When both are lit that shows everything is working properly and if 1 or both of them is out them you will need to investigate a problem. For that extra level of protection for your homes electrical appliances/devices using an affordable device like this is a great idea.
- Very Affordable
- High protection rating
- Easy to monitor status

EATON CHSPT2ULTRA
Out of all the devices I tested this one was definitely the easiest to install. It only took about 15-20 minutes to get the protector out of the box to up and running for any electrician.
This unit offers a high electrical protection rating of 108,000 amps which is more than enough for protecting against powerful surges. This will protect against any powerful surges even lightning.
This unit is overall a simple unit that does exactly what you want for an affordable price point and I can easily recommend it.
- Fast install time
- Very high protection rating – ideal for common lightning areas
- Cheap
- Works with all breaker boxes

Siemens QSA2020SPD
If you are looking for an affordable surge protector this one from siemens is a great option to consider.
Installation with this unit was easy and only took about 20 minutes to get things up and running. If you compare the maximum peak voltage that this surge protector can handle it isn’t as high as other at about 40,000 amps, What this basically equates to is if you are using this to protect against lightning surges I would advice for going for another unit though for protection against any other type of surges that level of protection will be more than enough.
Overall the design of the device isn’t that great or high end though it does what you need from it for a low price so it’s worth checking out.
- Cheap
- Suitable for most surges excluding lightning
- Lower protection rating
- Lower build quality and design
