Best Vacuum for Shag Carpet – Detailed Round Up

When you have shag carpeting in your home it can be much more difficult and tricky to get clean when compared with traditional carpeting.

A lot of vacuums simply don’t have the power or functionality to clean them properly. So, I went on a mission to find the best options out there that not only have the power needed but work well on the shag carpet and are generally really adaptable and work on a host of surfaces not only shag carpets.

After using over 15 different vacuums I have come to the conclusion below to which are the best suited vacuums for shag carpets in particular. Below are my top 5 options.

Best Vacuum for Shag Carpet – Top 5

Best Vacuum for Thick Carpet ?

#1 ProTeam ProForce 1500XP

If you are looking for a seriously impressive vacuum this Proteam option is a great choice. Even though it is branded as a commercial vacuum cleaner it is still a great choice for use at home as well. My one favorite thing about this vacuum is the suction. It is one of the more powerful vacuums that I have used and that’s really why is works great on shag carpet.

Some of the vacuums I have used simply don’t have the suction power to pick up all the dust and grim in a thick shag carpet though you definitely won’t have that issue here. The second thing I like here is the design which makes for moving it around a breeze and it moves seamlessly even through shag carpet. It’s basically only the suction base of the vacuum which is in contact with the carpet which allows it to glide more seamlessly.

Advantages
  • Great suction power
  • Easy to use through shag carpet
  • High build quality
Disadvantages
  • Expensive

Affordable Option

#2 Eureka FloorRover

I wanted to include at least 1 or 2 affordable options and this vacuum was one of the best priced vacuums with great functionality vacuums that I have used. The main thing that I really liked about this vacuum is its design.

The big wheels make using it on shag carpet very easy thanks to the easy maneuverability. The suction is right in front of the wheels and it glides right through the shag carpet. Also for a budget vacuum the suction power was really impressive – it was the best vacuum in terms of suction power under 200$.

Another thing I like about this one is that it is easy to clean and maintain and doesn’t use any bags. The cylinder just fills and can be emptied as needed which is simple to do. Also the filter can be removed and it too is easy to clean which saves a lot of time and money as there is no need for replacing bags.

Advantages
  • Affordable
  • Easy to move around
  • Easy to manoeuvre
  • Excellent suction
  • Easy to clean
Disadvantges

Best Vacuum for Thick Carpet

#3 Soniclean Soft Carpet Vacuum

This Soniclean is the best vacuum for long carpet I tested not only for cleaning shag carpets but for all surfaces in general even including bare floors.

This vacuum is branded as a vacuum that is ideal for use for soft carpets and undoubtedly it does a great job of it. This vacuum is powerful and does a great job of getting off inground dirt and dust which gathers up over time.

The vacuum does 200 vibrations per minute which helps to loosen dust and grim and generally helps to lift more of the nastiness you are trying to get at which is particularly ideal for shag carpets. Of all the vacuums I used this vacuum felt the gentlest with soft carpets and would do less damage or less wear damage to carpets that are softer.

The final thing I would like to mention is that this vacuum is really lightweight at only 10 lbs. which makes for maneuvering it around easy as pie and unlike some other heavier vacuums anyone can easily use it.
Advantages
  • Great suction power
  • Brilliant build quality
  • Lightweight
  • Works best with soft carpets
  • My personal favorite
Disadvantages
  • n/a

#4 Shark DuoClean

The one thing I particularly like about this vacuum is its suction area, this is because it has a double brush like system which really helps grab in ground dust and hair etc when running it over a surface. This system along which solid suction seems to really clean the thick carpet well. Also for regular carpet and hard floors it does an excellent job – it is a great overall vacuum.

When compared with others it isn’t just as smooth when moving through shag carpet though is does seem to really grab the dirt and dust well because of that. Also moving it around isn’t too difficult because of it being quite lightweight.

Advantages
  • Great brush like suction system
  • Great overall vacuum
  • Reasonably priced
  • Easy to handle and steer
Disadvantages
  • A little abrasive on carpets

#5 Electrolux EL4335A

This is the only vacuum in this list which isn’t an upright vacuum though the way the nozzle and suction cup is designed it basically makes it have similar functionality to an upright model. The best feature of this vacuum is its suction. This powerful suction makes cleaning carpets that are thick and shaggy carpets a breeze – in particular this vacuum has a hose which a brush attachment which works incredibly well on thick carpet or harder to reach places.

This vacuum doesn’t use bags and simply just uses a filter which can be replaced occasionally, or you can buy a separate one that can be maintained and cleaned so you don’t have to constantly replace the filter. As you don’t need to replace bags constantly this will indirectly save you money when compared with a bagged vacuum. Cleaning this vacuum is simple you just empty the cylinder and you can replace or maintain the filter periodically as you need.

One thing I would like to mention is the hose itself. The hose is a bit stiff when you first start to use this vacuum though over some usage it starts to loosen and become less stiff.

A final thing I would like to mention is that this vacuum is relatively quiet for a vacuum. This is a pleasant change from most of the other vacuums which tend to be quite loud and noisy.

Advantages
  • Powerful suction
  • No bags needed
  • Effective at cleaning shag carpets
  • Relatively quiet
  • Easy to clean and maintain
Disadvantages
  • Hose is a bit stiff when new and needs to be used to loosen over time
