Watercolors + Paper Octopus

This morning we created these cute, colorful creatures. I cut out the heads and tentacles ahead of time, and then gathered the watercolors, salt, paper and glue.

First, the girls wet their papers with a towel.

Then they began painting the ocean background with cool colors - blue, green and purple.
We sprinkled salt on the wet paint to give it a mottled texture.
While the watercolors were drying, we got busy on the octopus.
Here is a pattern for the octopus. Click on the image to enlarge and then print it out. Make two of each tentacle, so there will be a total of eight.

The girls glued the eight tentacles to the back of the octopus head before gluing the octopus onto his ocean background.

Lastly, we added the googley eyes, because no octopus is complete without googley eyes. We placed them low on the head, just above the tentacles.

So much fun!

Watercolors with the girls...learning a cool color scheme...using salt to add texture...you are right up this art teachers ally. Love the added octopus. Perhaps we'll use this when learning the cool color scheme for school. And you are right, no octopus is complete without googly eyes!

I had to come back to your site and say thanks. I did this project with my 2 and 3 year olds this morning and they turned out so cute! My son's room is all fish so I am going to display them in there. I found your site through Sarah Markleys, and I will be bookmarking it! I will say that the octapus pattern wouldn't print right for me, so I had to make my own, (easy enough) and we did a jelly fish one too!
